Garage Door Opener Repair in Roanoke, VA
Motor hums but nothing moves, the door stops partway, or the remote does nothing. We find the real cause first, because many opener problems are really door, spring or sensor problems.
Opener symptoms and what they usually mean
Check the safe items first. Stop when the table says to call.
| What you see | Likely cause | Safe for you to check? | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Door goes down, then reverses | Photo eyes blocked, dirty or out of line | Yes. Wipe both lenses and check that both lights are steady | Realign or replace sensors |
| Motor hums, door does not move | Broken spring or stripped opener gear | Look only. Do not pull on the door | Spring or gear repair |
| Remote does nothing, wall button works | Dead battery or lost programming | Yes. Replace the battery first | Reprogram or replace remote |
| Nothing works, no lights on the opener | No power, tripped breaker or failed unit | Yes. Check the outlet and breaker | Opener repair or replacement |
| Door stops partway | Travel or force settings, binding track, worn rollers | Partly. Look for something in the track | Adjust limits, repair the door |
| Opener works some days only | Weak signal, failing logic board, sensor issue | Partly. Try new batteries | Diagnose on site |
Many opener problems are not the opener
The opener only guides the door. If a spring is broken or the track is binding, the opener strains and can burn out. Replacing the opener without fixing the door wastes money. We inspect the door, springs, cables and sensors before we touch the motor.
Two small things also cause trouble. Bright sun on a sensor lens can cause false signals, so a door that acts up only in the afternoon may need the sensor shaded. And some bulbs in the opener light can add radio noise that weakens the remote signal, so try the original bulb type if the problem started after a bulb change.
Chain, belt, screw drive and wall mount openers
| Type | How it works | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Chain drive | Metal chain pulls the trolley along the rail | Common and sturdy, usually louder |
| Belt drive | Rubber belt moves the trolley | Quieter, a common choice when living space is near the garage |
| Screw drive | Threaded rod moves the trolley | Fewer moving parts, can be affected by temperature swings |
| Wall mount (jackshaft) | Motor sits beside the door shaft | Saves ceiling space, useful with high ceilings or low headers |
Safety sensors are not optional
Residential openers sold in the United States must include entrapment protection under the UL 325 safety standard. The photo eyes near the floor are part of that protection. If a sensor keeps tripping, we fix the cause. We never bypass a safety feature, and we test the auto reverse on every opener we touch.
Battery backup
If the power goes out the opener stops. A battery backup opener keeps the door working through short outages. Every garage should also have a working manual release that everyone in the house knows how to use.
When replacing the opener makes more sense
HomeAdvisor notes that a new opener installed typically starts around $250 to $500, and that replacement is worth considering when repairs approach that range or the opener is 10 to 15 years old. We tell you honestly which side of that line your opener is on. See our cost guide for more published ranges.

Garage door opener repair questions
Why does my garage door go down and then back up?
The safety sensors are usually blocked, dirty or out of line. Wipe both lenses and check that both indicator lights are steady. If it still reverses, call us. Do not disable the sensors.
Why does the motor hum but the door will not move?
A broken spring or a stripped gear is the usual cause. Stop using the opener and call us.
Why did my remote stop working?
Replace the battery first. If the wall button still works but the remote does not, the remote may need reprogramming or replacing.
Can you repair any brand of opener?
Tell us the brand and model when you call and we will confirm before we book the visit.
Is it worth repairing an old opener?
If repair cost is close to a new opener, or the opener is 10 to 15 years old, replacement often makes more sense. We give you both numbers.
